As the Department of Education (DepEd) strengthens basic education through the newly revised MATATAG K to 10 Curriculum, teachers are provided with structured tools to ensure quality instruction. One of these essential tools is the Weekly Lesson Log (WLL). For Grade 3 teachers, the WLL is more than just a document—it is a roadmap that guides daily classroom teaching in a clear, organized, and learner-centered way.

The MATATAG Curriculum aims to focus more on foundational skills like literacy, numeracy, and good values. For Grade 3 learners, this means mastering essential competencies in Filipino, English, Mathematics, Araling Panlipunan, Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao (EsP), and Science, while also engaging in Music, Arts, PE, and Health (MAPEH). With these subjects integrated carefully, the WLL ensures that lessons are well-paced and aligned with learners' developmental levels.

Each Weekly Lesson Log for Grade 3 follows a format that includes learning competencies (MELCs), objectives, learning activities, assessment, and remediation or enrichment plans. The WLL allows teachers to prepare engaging and inclusive activities while addressing the needs of diverse learners. Under MATATAG, more emphasis is placed on interactive, contextual, and meaningful learning experiences—moving away from rote memorization to real-life application.

Another key feature of the WLL is its flexibility. While it provides a standard framework, teachers have the freedom to adjust content and strategies based on the actual performance and interest of students. This aligns with the MATATAG principle of inclusive and responsive education, where no child is left behind.

Moreover, the WLL is also a time-saving tool. Instead of preparing detailed daily lesson plans, teachers can focus more on delivering quality instruction and attending to learners' needs. This helps reduce administrative workload and promotes a better work-life balance among educators.

The Grade 3 Weekly Lesson Log under the MATATAG K to 10 Curriculum is a vital part of the classroom teaching-learning process. It reflects the new direction of DepEd in building a stronger, more relevant, and learner-centered education. Through careful planning, collaboration, and implementation, the WLL helps make every week in school meaningful—for both teachers and learners.

The Guardians of Wawa Dam

The Guardians of Wawa Dam

by Odes M. Dagong

In the green valleys of Montalban, Rizal, Bernardo, and Maria, the mythical guardians of Wawa Dam, faced a new challenge. They discovered villagers thoughtlessly dumping trash into the water. They greeted the villagers warmly with “Good morning.”

Bernardo and Maria felt it was important to share with every villager that proper waste disposal is a key measure in preventing harmful chemicals and pollutants from polluting soil, water sources, and the environment. They expressed their gratitude to the community, saying, "Thank you for taking the time to learn and help us in this important task." Educating others was a crucial part of their mission to protect the dam and preserve the environment.

Surprised by the mythical guardians of Wawa Dam's unexpected presence, the villagers realized the dam's gift and their oversight. From that moment on, they promised to throw away their waste correctly. This proves Maria and Bernardo's transformative influence and the potential for positive change.

One evening, a lump appeared in the dam's wall. Maria and Bernardo repaired it under the dark sky using magic, pushing, pulling, and carrying rocks.

They estimated the area they needed to cover using square tile units as they worked. For instance, if they had a rectangular section of the wall that was 5 miles long and 3 miles wide, they calculated the area by multiplying the length by the width. Their formula was Area = length × width, 5 miles × 3 miles = 15 square tile units. This estimation helped them determine how many rocks they needed to repair the dam efficiently. After that, they weaved a belt from tall grasses to calm the wind and shield the dam from stone fragments.

Then, the old spirit threatened to stop the water from flowing through the fields. "These conditions are testing our skills," Maria shouted. They worked together and did their best to shield the dam from stone fragments.

"That field needs water," Bernardo said, pointing to a dried land area. Demonstrating their water management skills and respect for nature convinced the old spirit to sympathize with and preserve their beloved dam.

As time passed, it became clear that Bernardo and Maria were not just guardians of the dam but also the land. Every problem they overcame as guardians of Wawa Dam secured their constant commitment to environmental conservation, giving them confidence and a sense of security.

The Revised MATATAG Curriculum: Strengthening Education for the Filipino Child

The Department of Education (DepEd) introduced the Revised MATATAG Curriculum as a major step toward strengthening the foundation of basic education in the Philippines. MATATAG, which stands for MATATAG stands for “Make the curriculum relevant to produce job-ready, Active. and responsible citizens; TAke steps to accelerate the delivery of basic education. services and provision f , acilities; TAke good care of learners by promoting learners. reflects the government’s goal to deliver a more responsive, inclusive, and learner-centered curriculum.

One of the main reasons for the revision is to address the overcrowded and congested K to 12 curriculum. For years, teachers and students have struggled with too many competencies that were difficult to cover within the school year. The MATATAG Curriculum reduces the number of learning competencies to focus only on what is most essential and meaningful. This allows for deeper understanding and mastery of lessons, rather than just memorizing facts.

Another key feature of the MATATAG Curriculum is the emphasis on foundational skills, especially in early grades. These include literacy, numeracy, values education, and socio-emotional learning. By strengthening these areas in the primary years, learners are better prepared for more complex subjects in the upper grades. The inclusion of Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC) and Peace Education also helps in shaping students to become responsible and respectful citizens.

Moreover, the revised curriculum supports inclusive education. It promotes gender sensitivity, cultural relevance, and consideration of the needs of diverse learners. The curriculum also integrates 21st-century skills, such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and digital literacy—making students globally competitive and future-ready.

Teachers benefit from this curriculum as well. With fewer but focused competencies, educators can plan lessons more effectively and cater to the varied needs of their learners. The reduced load also lessens stress and allows for more meaningful teaching and learning experiences.

The MATATAG Curriculum is not just a change in content but a transformation in how learning is approached in the Philippines. It is a step toward solving long-standing gaps in quality education, such as poor performance in international assessments and high dropout rates.

The Revised MATATAG Curriculum aims to build resilient learners and competent citizens by making the education system more focused, inclusive, and relevant. It is a hopeful move that supports the call for a better future for every Filipino child.
